El Paso

Screen Shot 2018-05-11 at 12.05.15 PM5 mi It’s my first visit to the very western part of Texas. My hotel room overlooks… Mexico! That red “X” lit sign is the Mexico/USA southern border.

I wanted to run to the border, minus the Taco Bell implications. It looked plenty closer than it was… my 5am start allowed me to go 2.5 miles out and back on a feeder road for I-10. No visit to the border this time!

It was very dry with a headwind going out, temp at 82 degrees and falling. I was on the road and some sidewalks, not many cars and no other runners on the streets that early. The dry breeze would quickly parch your breath and lead to dried out eyes. The elevation of ElPaso is 3700 feet – more than I’m used to. For comparison, the Las Vegas strip is at approx 2400 feet. Florida where I usually run is at 5 ft.

The photo is from my hotel, that’s how close El Paso is from Mexico. To the north, New Mexico!
