Track with spikes 

 5 miles – Today I wore John’s track spike shoes to the workout. We watched the IAAF London World Championships, taking place in the rain. I wondered what that would be like, John reminded me he had his spikes in the closet – so why not try that route. This was my first time running with them, having never competed in high school or college running.

They (Addidas) are light and long, a size 10. The most noticeable feature is their negative drop – the front of the foot is higher off the ground than the heel. I run with Altra shoes, zero drop, but this was even more pronounced.

It rained as I drove to the Benjamin Track, and then continued that way for the warm up mile. I could grip on the surface well even when it was wet, the negative drop thing wasn’t evident. I found the weight of the shoes amazing – so light as if I only wore a sock with the spikes attached. When we began the regular intervals, the rain stopped for good.

Speaking with Paul after the run, he said my calves and legs would feel the difference from the spikes. I didn’t think anything would happen, as I didn’t feel any difference. He was right! Thursday night in bed and Friday morning my Achilles area was very sore on both sides. I couldn’t stretch it out or find relief. Saturday’s long run would be interesting, as I wondered if it would heal up by then.

Drizzled

16mi. A peak at the radar online would have most bail out on any planned run today… it was green rain and yellow storms across the whole state. I woke up not to the sound of the radio alarm, but to static, I must have blown out the FM station I usually get when I wake, so by some luck I woke a 4:32am and saw it was time to go. No early morning exercises this time!

I met Chiara and Steve Bernstein to do the PGA and back route. It was drizzling, so I chose not to keep my shirt on, I figured wet is wet, I had visions of getting plowed by a big red blip on the weather.com screen. We ran with no water there and back. I used the visor light and a rear blinking light. A very weak one that needs either batteries or replacement. The only memorable thing about the first six miles was seeing a few cyclists zip by in the early pre-dawn mist, and Chiara rolling her ankle on a rock causing her to fall. She scraped the same knee as per the Carlin Park tumble she took into the woods – but no bad injuries this time either. Once back at the store, only a few people were collecting to make the jog to the inlet and back. I ran with Linda, Steve, Chiara and a few other guys that surged up to us then dropped back. A quick bathroom stop at the pier had us turn for home into more of a breeze than we had coming up. I don’t mind that, Steve and I spoke about cycling all while noticing that the breezes were now sustained winds. I joked about my visor getting thrown off, that’s almost what happened at the water stop half way to the store. We kept a good pace coming home, I was tired and the long grey lululemon shorts I chose were rubbing bare on my legs and crotch. Next time they get compression shorts as an underlayer.

Breakfast at Hurricane Cafe with Chiara, then home to tile and rest.
